Philosophy

Social Capital: We recognize and value the natural connections between people – neighbors, friends, family members – that result in a tendency to want to support one another and share resources. We believe these connections – social capital – are a powerful force that is unrecognized and untapped by social service agencies, government institutions, etc., in their traditional responses to social issues.

Theory of Change: Our approach to ending domestic violence in Latin@ communities is through social capital. Our primary investment is in our community members, focusing on changing behaviors and social norms. The process is Latin@ driven and creates Latin@ relevant responses, not programs, where people live – home, workplace, market place or church. Mainstream organizations and systems are identified as allies to support community-based responses.

Strengths-Based: We affirm the wisdom and capabilities of Latinas. We recognize that every woman that comes in contact with our organization has a unique set of life experiences, and while she may be dealing with the impact of violence in her life, she is equipped with knowledge, skills and her own support networks. Casa de Esperanza focuses on her inherent strengths and empowers every woman to make decisions that will work best for her, even if she chooses to remain with her partner.
