What is Domestic Violence?
- Are you frightened by your partner's temper?
- Are you afraid to disagree?
- Do you have to justify everything you do, every place you go, or every person
you see to avoid your partner's anger?
- Does your partner put you down but then tell you that he or she loves you?
- Do you stay away from friends or family because of your partner's jealousy?
- Have you been forced into having sex when you didn't want to?
- Are you afraid to break up because your partner has threatened to hurt you?
If you answered "yes" to these questions, you are suffering abuse.
But you are not alone.

Domestic violence can take many forms:
- Psychological or emotional abuse
- Physical abuse
- Economic abuse
- Sexual abuse
- Intimidation
Domestic violence occurs between family members or persons involved in a close relationship:
- husband and wife
- gay, lesbian, bisexual, or transgender couples
- unmarried couples--including youth who are in a relationship
- adult child and elderly parent
Some statistics on domestic violence :
- Every 12 seconds a woman is beaten by her husband, boyfriend, or lover.
- Battering happens in every culture, age, color, nationality, and socio-economic level. Battering also occurs in same-sex relationships.
- 93% of victims of domestic violence are women.
- 64% of all women will be battered in their lifetime.
- 60% of battered women are battered when they are pregnant.
- 81% of men who batter had fathers who abused their mothers.
- Battering is the single major cause of injury to women-more frequent than car accidents, muggings, and rapes combined. It is the leading cause of emergency room visits by women.
