Education for Women
Casa de Esperanza has been educating Latinas about domestic violence and related issues for many years. Working to demystify beliefs and raise consciousness about domestic abuse, Casa de Esperanza's Education Manager conducts regular workshops, talleres. Topics for talleres range from issues relating to domestic violence to subjects that appear to be unrelated: Latinas participate in deciding which subjects will be addressed, and we shape talleres around them.
Seemingly unrelated titles, such as "Legal Issues for Women," are "safe" for victims to attend--if the women in attendance are concerned with legal issues related to abuse, the leader will take the opportunity to address them. Other requested topics are addressed because they are important to the women and serve in their personal development and growth.
Examples of taller topics:
Violence and Healthy Relationships
Self-esteem
Steps to Rejuvenating Your Confidence
Changes after September 11
What Do Men Think about Abuse?
Besides sharing important information, talleres provide an opportunity for Latinas to gather and connect with women who have similar interests and concerns.
Casa de Esperanza has trained Latinas to conduct talleres. In addition to leading their own workshops, they have appeared on a local Spanish language radio program and spoken encouragingly to Latina victims about domestic violence and how to get help (read the article in our winter 2003 newsletter). These women took active leadership in their communities, taking responsibility to address domestic violence, and are expanding the forces working within the community to put an end to abuse.

Latinas are taking leadership in talleres and guide decision-making about subject matter. These workshops are a key vehicle for engaging Latinas, creating mutual support, and changing community attitudes about domestic violence. By training Latinas to teach their own talleres, the work expands, and the community is mobilizing.
