A battered Latina's fear results from the unknown, isolation, and lack of information. Casa de Esperanza is Latina and understands.

Casa de Esperanza offers support, access to resources, and--because we are Latina--a profound understanding of her culture. Battered Latinas find support that affirms who they are.

Seeing beyond the crisis, Casa de Esperanza also knows that Latinas are resourceful and strong (many have come to a new land and supported and maintained their families here). Familia and community are vital to Latinas' identity and strength; and Latino culture is sharing, expansive, and relational. Casa de Esperanza aims to help each Latina identify and draw upon the natural supports that exist in her community. We further equip her by providing her with information and resources that will assist her to achieve her goals.

Our Approach
Casa de Esperanza recognizes the centrality of familia in Latinas' lives and takes a holistic approach to advocacy. When a Latina is in crisis, our Family Advocates work with the mother and the children, rather than working with them separately.

We work to empower each woman to "take back"--from the abuser--the control of her life. Rather than creating dependency on Casa de Esperanza, we build on her strengths, assisting her to believe in herself and what she wants for her family. This "strengths-based" approach empowers women and supports them to believe in themselves and reach their goals. It has also changed Casa de Esperanza from a crisis-oriented organization to one that understands that every woman is able to decide the direction that she will take.
