Youth Peer Education
Casa de Esperanza’s Latin@ Youth Peer Education Initiative gives Latin@ teens rewarding opportunities. The peer educator training is designed to develop skills in leadership, public speaking and facilitation. After the teens are trained, their role as Peer Educators begins.
They develop workshops and presentations for youth in schools and community settings, focusing on topics that are important to youth. They also participate in conferences, legislative advocacy and one has become a member on a national council focusing on teen dating violence. Recent topics of the workshops they’ve presented include:
- Healthy Relationships and Teen Dating Violence
- Gender and the Media
- Alcohol, Drugs and Healthy Relationships
- Self-Esteem
The Peer Education Initiative is the byproduct of Casa de Esperanza’s youth film, ¡Ubícate!™. Latin@ youth played key roles in the creation of the film—writing, producing and performing—that sets the stage for straightforward discussion of teen relationships, including dating violence.
